CHAPTER ELEVEN
âHOW WAS YOUR dinner last night?â
âHmm?â Dom looked up from the article he was reading in the Maine Sunday Telegram. His mother was pouring the rest of the soup theyâd had for lunch into plastic containers for the freezer.
âDidnât you say you were going to The Daily Catch? How was it?â
âOh, great. Delicious. Iâll take you there before I go back to base.â He smiled and resumed reading.
âAnd did you and Suzanna meet up with anyone else?â
âUm, no, but her cousin, Benâremember him?âwas there with his fiancée.â
âOf course I remember Ben Winters, from your basketball days.â Marie frowned. âI think his fiancée is the new editor of The Beacon.â
Dom raised his head again. âIs she?â
âYes, and she was the one who was blamed for that awful business years ago, with young Brandon Winters. But she was a victim herself. Very sad situation.â
âI remember you telling me about it all at Christmas.â
There was a pause while Marie ran water into the now empty soup pot. âSo...was your dinner with Suzanna a date?â
Dom hid his smile. He figured his mother would get around to the question sheâd been itching to ask since he left to meet Zanna at the bistro. âMom, Iâm helping her and Henry Jenkins organize the memorial ceremony for her brother. I told you that.â
âDominic Kennedy,â Marie said, walking over to where he sat at the kitchen table. âYour face is a dead giveaway. Iâve always been able to tell when youâre trying to pull the wool over my eyes, as your father used to say.â She stroked the top of his head before going back to the sink.
Dom sighed. His mom still treated him like an adolescent sometimes during his visits home. Still, this was the perfect moment to tell her about the baby.
He thought back to Zannaâs reveal about selling the hotel. That meant there could be another option than co-parenting from a distance. If she was no longer tied to the hotel, sheâd be free to leave the Cove. Perhaps follow him wherever the new job took him.
Then there was the kiss. Heâd fallen asleep floating on that kiss. There was no denying the attraction between them and neither distance nor time had affected it. Their connection went deeper than attraction, too. But was it love?
His sigh drew his motherâs attention again. âIâm not prying, Dom. Iâm happy that youâre getting out and meeting up with old friends from high school. I realize you probably have a busy social life in Norfolk when youâre not at sea and I hope you meet somebody special, if you havenât already. Thatâs what parents wantâto see their children happy with someone to love.â She looked at him, her eyes shining, and he was about to confide in her when she unexpectedly added, âWhy donât you invite Suzanna to dinner here? Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday. Whichever works for both of you.â
âOkay, Mom, I will. And now, please let me finish this article.â
She waved a dismissive hand and he grinned. After a few minutes, he folded up the newspaper.
